Cinematic Futures: Bridging art, technology and interdisciplinary training

C-Fabit, a film education and production project

The project

C-Fabit is based on the idea that the best film education is built through hands-on practice.

The programme integrates cinema, visual arts, new technologies and the humanities into a path that goes beyond the boundaries of a single discipline, training professionals capable of moving confidently across different languages and tools.

It is led by the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania, in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples for post-production and transmedia research.

The production of original works, TV series, films and documentaries thus becomes both a tool for academic research and tangible proof of the skills acquired in the field.

C-Fabit, hands-on training between academia and industry

The context

The project reconnects with an interrupted legacy: in the early twentieth century, Catania was a hub of international film production, home to studios such as Etna Film.

C-Fabit builds on this tradition, aiming to restore the city’s central role in the contemporary audiovisual landscape, at a time when cinema has embraced digital technology at every stage, from development to post-production.

This initiative is made possible by funding from the European Union through the Ministry of University and Research under the ational Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

C-Fabit, building on Catania’s cinematic heritage

The goals

Experimental and interdisciplinary teaching

Students work directly on set, alongside professionals across key production departments. The programme aims to train media artist capable of operating across every stage of the creative process.

An alternative hub to Northern Italy

C-Fabit builds a training and production infrastructure in Southern Italy, capable of competing with the country’s main film hubs, with a strong international outlook.

Support for the film industry

Studios, production offices, editing suites and state-of-the-art digital equipment are made available to Film Commissions and production companies choosing Sicily as a location.

New audiovisual languages

C-Fabit invests in the exploration of contemporary languages: from the use of artificial intelligence as a narrative tool to virtual and augmented reality, through to transmedia post-production.

Locus C-Fabit collects photographs, emotions and cinematic genres to create a collaborative map of the territory.

Every mapped location becomes part of a living archive of cinematic inspiration and a valuable resource for filmmakers searching for the perfect setting to tell a story.

Project coordinator

Prof. Gianpiero Vincenzo

Writer, art critic and lecturer in Sociology at the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania. A journalist and essayist, he has curated contemporary art exhibitions and published novels translated into five languages.
